The Fund for Public Health in New York City (FPHNYC), on behalf of the Building Healthy Communities (BHC) initiative, is currently accepting proposals for community-based organizations and groups interested in activating the East Harlem Community Walking Trail.
Building Healthy Communities, a New York City Mayoral initiative, aims to improve community health outcomes in 12 neighborhoods by increasing access to fresh food, improving opportunities for physical activity, and promoting safe and vibrant public spaces. BHC is partnering with the East Harlem Neighborhood Health Action Center to encourage community activation of the East Harlem Community Walking Trail, a 3.5 mile pathway along East Harlem sidewalks that runs east and west along 106th and 115th Streets, connecting residents to Central Park and Randall’s Island. The trail was developed by a coalition of community-based organizations and residents and highlights East Harlem’s rich history and assets while improving physical activity and safety through coordinated group walks. This effort was led by the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH).
The purpose of this Request for Proposals (RFP) is to identify and support groups that would like to offer programming/activation of the East Harlem Community Walking Trail. This includes community walks and/or engagement activities and events that utilize the trail. Ideally, groups will use this trail for the purposes of community engagement and physical activity while highlighting some key neighborhood assets. Funding for these activation projects will be disbursed by FPHNYC to eligible groups awarded mini-grants based on their response to this RFP.
