El Museo del Barrio's Annual THree Kings Day Parade

In its 33rd year, El Museo will once again celebrate El Barrio's time-honored tradition of the Three Kings Day Parade, its renowned procession through the streets of El Barrio. This time-honored tradition will once again fill up the neighborhood's streets with lively music, colorful dancing and parrandas. The New York premiere of Los Que Se Quedan is presented in collaboration with the Mexican Cultural Institute. A documentary about the families of eleven men, women, and children from different regions of Mexico who have crossed the border to the United States in search of better opportunities, the film beautifully explores the melancholy, memories and identity of those who remain and who continue to wait for their loved ones to return. Directors and Producer will be present for Q&A following the screening. Los Que Se Quedan (Dirs. Juan Carlos Rulfo and Carlos Hagerman, Mexico, 2008, 98min, Documentary, Spanish with English subtitles).

This joint Museum for African Art and 92nd St. Y program will focus on the discussion of African documentaries portraying culture and art in an anthropological perspective. Four filmmakers will screen their films and discuss their work in the field in four sessions from October to January. Asmara - capitol of the East African nation of Eritrea - is recognized as an architectural gem. In this film, Asmara, Eritrea, Caterina Borelli presents Asmarinos, from different walks of life guide us through the streets of their city and bring us to places of their choice. In doing so, and by talking about 'their own' Asmara, each person locates personal memories in public spaces investing the urban environment with individual meanings. Through their narrations - a chorus of different experiences embodying the nation - the country's history from colonialism to independence comes to life. Running time: 63 minutes.
