M60 Select Bus Service

M60 Select Bus Service

MTA New York City Transit (NYCT) and the New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) plan to upgrade the M60 to Select Bus Service, featuring off-board fare payment, dedicated bus lanes, limited stops and transit signal priority in Manhattan. As part of the project, DOT would also make improvements to curb regulations and pedestrian safety along the corridor.

Begininning in September 2012, as part of their public outreach and engagement efforts for the project, NYCT and DOT  have held a series of public workshops and convened a community advisory council to assess community concerns and suggestions for improving bus service along 125th Street. For more information on this project, please visit DOT's M60 Select Bus Service web page.

Representatives of CB11 have participated in each of the public workshops and a representative of the Public Safety & Transportation Committee sit on the community advisory council.

The CB11 Public Safety & Transportation Committee will review the project.

*** On June 18, 2013, Community Board 11 voted to oppose the revised M60 Select Bus Service plan (read letter to DOT & NYCT).

*** On July 16, 2013, DOT and NYCT issued the following statement:

"Dear Stakeholder,

Thank you for your dedicated participation and engagement on the M60 Select Bus Service (SBS) Project. You have given us a tremendous amount of feedback about bus service on 125th Street, as well as other issues affecting pedestrians and motorists along the corridor.

There are still a number of concerns about the project from the local Community Boards and elected officials that we have not been able to resolve to date. As a result, NYCDOT and MTA New York City Transit have decided not to proceed with the M60 Select Bus Service project at this time. We do hope to have a continued dialogue with community stakeholders about ways that we can continue to improve bus speed and service, traffic flow, parking, and pedestrian safety along 125th Street. In the short term, we plan to work with the Community Boards to explore whether any parking or traffic improvements discussed during the SBS outreach process can improve 125th Street for all users.

Again, thank you for the time and effort that you put into this project, and we hope that you will continue to be a part of the discussion for how to improve 125th Street."

*** On October 11, 2013,   NYC DOT Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan, MTA Chairman and CEO Thomas F. Prendergast and State Sen. Bill Perkins announced that M60 Select Bus Service (SBS) will launch in April 2014. Read  full press release here.
