Youth & Education Committee Chair:

Chair: Cesar Ortiz

Vice-Chair: Chester Asher

Youth & Education Mission Statement:

"The Youth and Education committee is comprised of Community Board members and representatives from youth and community groups throughout the district.  Our mission is to advocate for and do our best to provide for funding, programs, and policies that help youth to secure a college education, careers of their own choosing, and economic stability for themselves and their families.  Our educational activities should seek to encompass all learners, both youth and adult including our English as a Second Language Learners and our special needs learners.  We advocate for academic excellence in all of our schools.  We advocate for and do our best to provide knowledge of social justice issues that affect our community so that residents are better able to address them in productive ways. We seek to develop a networking relationship with the district’s parochial, proprietary schools and colleges, and moreover, to assist schools in getting needed city services.  We strive to give direct voice to the youth and assist the East Harlem Youth Council, and other youth groups in any way possible consistent with our mission."

http://www.principals.org/s_nassp/sec_inside.asp?CID=538&DID=48172 -- Grants of $1000 to $12000 to outstanding high school seniors. Principals must nominate, no more than one senior per school. Deadline Dec. 2008.

http://www.galeschools.com/pdf/TEAMS-form.pdf -- Demonstrating collaboration between library media specialists and teachers -- $2500. This one's a bit confusing to figure out. Deadline not til June 2009.

http://tapestry.nsta.org/ -- For innovative science projects that enhance classroom experience or school district. Deadline is January 2009. Looks like middle and high schools, and maybe elementary as well.

https://targetfieldtripgrants.target.com/rules.php -- Field trips!. Deadline Nov. 1, awarded in Feb. 2009. Grants of up to $800 each. K-12 public schools.

http://www.louiscalderfdn.org/gguide.html -- Here's one for charter and parochial schools. Take a look at past awards -- they're sizeable, though I think the level of funding to NYC-based schools is being reduced.

http://www.airbornetrust.com/programoverview.aspx -- These are grants between $200 and $10,000 for elementary and middle school arts programs.

Polling For Justice Survey

Manhattan Community Board 11 and the Youth & Education Committee are supporting this effort and encourage everyone to fill out the survey and pass it on to friends and family.

"We are a group of NYC youth and adult researchers who want to know what NYC youth think about health, education, safety, violence and the criminal justice system. There are over 50 young people working on Polling for Justice, and this is our chance to get our voice heard by lawmakers, city officials, researchers, educators and administrators.

We created a survey for NYC youth, ages 16 - 19. This summer we are getting over 5,000 NYC youth to take the survey! The more young people who respond the more powerful our voice will be, so please join us in our fight for justice! IT TAKES 40 - 50 MINUTES TO COMPLETE, and everyone who takes the survey gets a FREE MOVIE TICKET!"
