The Fund for Public Health in New York City (FPHNYC), on behalf of the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) in partnership with New York City Parks and Recreation (NYC Parks), currently seeks proposals from community-based organizations for Art in the Parks: Active Open Space, an initiative to activate designated park sites with health-inspired public art projects that promote physical activity and strengthen community connections. FPHNY will award contracts of up to $15,000 to up to 8 community-based organizations to support the design development and installation of public art projects that promote physical activity for an adult population in up to 8 designated parks sites in South Bronx, East Harlem and Central Brooklyn. Artworks may include murals, interactive sculpture, ground markings, or other design interventions that adhere to NYC Parks requirements (available online:https://www.nycgovparks.org/art-and-antiquities/temporary-guidelines) and create a walkable destination.
NYC Parks has designated the following sites eligible:
- Central Brooklyn – Lincoln Terrace/Arthur S. Somers Parks, St. Andrew’s Playground, Brower Park, Howard Playground
- East Harlem – White Park, Howard Bennett Playground
- South Bronx – Mullaly Park, Claremont Park, Inwood Park, Tremont Park, Railroad Park
This Request for Proposals (RFP) is not asking for submissions of public art, but rather for proposals describing the processes for artist selection, community engagement and artwork development and installation. Funding for these projects will be disbursed by FPHNY to eligible organizations based on their response to this RFP. The funding for this award is provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
